Tyrone Rawlins takes you through the basics of learning to jibe your directional. Please remember that it is advised that you wear a helmet and that you start learning in flat water/small waves. In this way you can minimise the chances of getting into a situation you are not qualified to handle. Have a read at the attached, and post your comments or feedback on how we can help others to get jibing faster and slicker!

Understanding Wind

If you are not a from a sailing background, the term “apparent” wind is probably not something you have ever heard of. Understanding the wind is a fundamental requirement for anyone embarking on the beginner stages of kitesurfing. Not only will this enable you to make a better selection of the right kite, but it will ensure you have a safer learning experience. Robin Tindall is a biokineticist, who is passionate about kitesurfing. His main focus is on sports performance and injuries, so if you have not met this guy before, keep an eye out on the Western Cape or Durban shores for him. Click on this link for the lowdown. Feel free to email him at robin@kineticwellness.com

Beginner Kiteboarder - Where do I start?

If I had R10 for every time someone asked me how to get into kiteboarding, I think I would be a very rich person! Honestly, the growth in the number of newcomers to the sport is phenomenal! Commonly asked questions are; “Janet, you are not strong, how do you hold onto that kite?”, “It looks so scary, I want to learn but how do I face the fear?”; “I do not want to look like an idiot and I feel totally out of control”. Given the recent tragedy of Brad Grobbelaar at river mouth in June, I urge you to caution yourselves and not accept a lending hand from a willing friend, but to embark on a rigorous course of lessons. That’s not negotiable! Things can go very wrong very quickly, so take your time to familiarise yourself with the basics and the risks you are exposing yourself to. Have a read of the attached article and post your comments!
